A Vizsla is a medium sized Hungarian hunting dog. There have only been Vizslas in the US since after World War II.
There are many breeds mistaken for a Vizsla, like Coonhounds, Weimaraners and Rhodesian Ridgebacks. Vizslas have reddish brown fur that is short. Their nose is the best way to tell a Vizsla. It is always the same color as their fur. The name Vizsla is pronounced "vish-la". The Vizsla weighs around 45 to 60 pounds and is 22 to 26 inches tall. They live about 12-15 years.
Their floppy ears are adorable. When they are puppies, they are at their cutest. They have wrinkly faces and green or blue eyes.
The Vizsla is a hunting and pointing breed. They can retrieve dead animals and stalk the animals. When they find prey they freeze and point at the animal. Then they move very slowly toward the prey.
The Vizsla is a very affectionate dog who will love to give you kisses. While being a good hunter the Vizsla is also a good family pet who gets along well with children.
Vizslas need tons of exercise. Just walking around the neighborhood isn't enough. They need an hour or hour and a half of walking or running.
Vizslas are not good if you live in an apartment. They need space to run and play. It takes four years for a Vizsla to mature. If you like puppies and are active, a Vizsla would be a good fit for you. They love a playmate and to wrestle. They also love to race to catch a ball. They are not a good pet for people who work all day.
Vizslas are smart and easily trainable. They are very sensitive though so when they do something bad, don't yell at them but instead, tell them when they are being good.
They like to rip up stuffed toys so don't give them to Vizslas instead they need hard toys.
